A calibrator used to inspect the length in the Japanese colonization period

In the early days, the measuring tapes were made of fabric; hence, they were also called fabric measuring tape. It would become inaccurate after being used for a long time. Therefore, inspection was necessary in order to confirm the tape could still meet the national standard, avoiding the chaos and disputes happening in the market. Handed down from the Japanese colonization period, this "Primary Measuring Tape for Inspection" was an instrument used to inspect the accuracy of fabric measuring tapes not only by the Japanese government, but also in the early period after the retrocession of Taiwan, by the Taiwan Provincial Inspection Institute of Weight and Measures. On the tape, the words "檢定用 (for calibration)" means the institute would bring out the tape to do on-site inspections; "第一 (primary)" means it was the primary standard. Besides, the words "第百八拾五號 (185)" is its designation number.
