  • Detail
    • Function / Purpose:
The matrix must be used with type-casting machines to cast lead types known as characters. Copper is used to create gravure letter molds through engraving or electroplating. Chinese matrices were numbered according to their size. There were three size systems: Type I, No. 2, No. 5, No. 7; No. 1, No. 4; No. 3, No. 6 and No. 8.
    • Characteristics:
Chinese matrices emerged during the 1830's with those made using electroplating being the most common in 1958. Engraved matrices increased in number after World War II and were of finer quality. The copper used in the matrices was electrically conductive, thermally conductive and ductile. They were easy to alloy with other metals and cheaper to use, so they enjoyed widespread popularity. This batch of matrices was produced using the electroplating method. They were donated by the Fonghsing Type Foundry and feature the characters "Feng Xing" in the indentation on the side. The plates are of significant historical value as they represent a direct link with Shanghai Regular Script. They may have also influenced the development of the Chinese computer fonts used today.
