The Fonghsing Type Foundry focused on casting and selling regular script lead types. This item was the foundry sign. Fonghsing Shanghai Script was well-known during the 1950's and was the ancestor to the regular script used today. This sign is therefore of particular historical significance.

In 1949, Fonghsing Type Foundry founder Mr. Hsu Hung-chang decided to move his type-casting business from Xiamen to Taiwan to escape the war. Fonghsing's regular script was adopted as the official script by the government and was the type used for printing presidential certificates. As such, it was considered the heir to the traditional Chinese regular script. The foundry closed in 1968 due to competition and over thirty years later, the sign was donated to the museum collection by the Hsu family. Apart from embodying a period in history, its material and format is also of historical interest.
