Used to register taxi fare

A mechanical taximeter used in the early days of Taiwan. According to "77262", the five local service telephone number digits on its surface, one can deduce that it was used during the 1950s-1960s. Early taximeters were mechanical type, which were used since 1961; however, after 1987, they were totally replaced by electronic ones. Like the electronic taximeter we use nowadays, the mechanical taximeters also needed to pass an examination before being used for business. Generally, a taximeter needs to pass two inspections before leaving the factory in order to ensure its accuracy of registering fares. The first one is called static inspection and a qualified meter will be added with a lead seal after passing it. The second one is the annual running inspection, after which a lead seal will be added on the qualified meter already installed in the taxi.
