  • Detail
    • Function / Purpose:
The zinc gravure is used for engraving matrices. Before using the precision matrix engraving machine, one should enlarge the strokes of the lead types with a projection method, and then employ wet plate photography to make the zinc gravure. After adjusting the carving depth and the machine according to the size of the needed types, the operator can then carve the types by following the strokes of the zinc gravure placed in the matrix engraving machine.
    • Characteristics:
A matrix (copper) was the basic tool for casting types in the era of movable type printing. Good types can only be produced by a type-casting machine and precise matrices. Before engraving, secure the zinc gravure into its position to prevent it from moving. Then put the copper block in position; install the engraving needle into the carving machine and then adjust the engraving depth to begin the engraving process. First, roughly trace the outline of the character on the zinc gravure; after several adjustments and fine engraving, a matrix used for casting types is shaped out of the copper block; take the matrix off the carving machine and put it on the projector; make the projector in line with the center of the character; if the examination through the projector shows no defects, the matrix is completed. Therefore, the zinc gravure has a close connection with the quality of the matrix; it is necessary to pay attention to its used time and expiration date. After use, put it in a standing type rack for storage and management. Although steel and copper can also be used for making gravures, zinc is still the most widely used material because it is cheap and easy to process.
